LONDON (ICIS)--CB&I has been awarded a contract by Indian petrochemicals major Reliance Industries to provide paraxylene (PX) technology for an aromatics complex in India, the US-based petrochemicals engineering firm said on Tuesday.

The complex, which will be one of the largest of its kind, is to be built at Jamnagar, Gujarat, India, said CB&I. However, capacity details were not disclosed.

"Our role as the exclusive licensor for BP's paraxylene technology is another example of how strategic collaborations are an effective approach for global producers like Reliance," said CB&I CEO Philip Asherman.

"Combined with the expertise of CB&I's Lummus Technology business sector, this technology provides the optimal solution in terms of cost and reliability," he added.

Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.

PX is an intermediate in the manufacture of polyester, a polymer used for a variety of applications, from fibres to engineering plastics.

In June, Reliance Industries said its total petrochemical capacity in India is expected to grow by 67% to a capacity of 25m tonnes/year when all its ongoing projects come on stream.
