LONDON (ICIS)--Borealis’s 175,000 tonne/year high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant in Burghausen, Germany, will not return to operation when the site comes back from a planned maintenance currently in progress, a company source confirmed on Thursday.

The plant had been due for closure at the end of 2014.

It is the latest in a line of polyethylene (PE) closures in Europe, as producers cut production at older non-profitable plants in the face of competition from newer lower-cost units, mainly in the Middle East and increasingly in North America.

Total’s Antwerp and Repsol’s Puertollano plants are on schedule for closing as above.

HDPE is currently tight in Europe, on closures, a strong US situation that is impacting some European buyers, fewer imports and stronger exports.

HDPE is used in packaging, the manufacture of household goods, and sometimes in the construction industry.
