SINGAPORE (ICIS)–China’s imports of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (R-PET) waste, parings and scrape dropped by 32.2% month on month to 167,390 tonnes in July, the latest data from China customs showed.

The drop in imports was likely due to lower demand brought about by the reduction of operating rates at Chinese recycling plants and recycled polyester plants, according to industry sources.

Stringent environmental pollution checks on waste water and gas by authorities also dampened demand, they said.

On a year-on-year basis, China’s imports of the material fell by 25.3% last month from the 224,112 tonnes recorded for July last year, the data showed.
