HOUSTON (ICIS)–Air Products broke ground on a methane reformer and cold box that will supply carbon monoxide, hydrogen and steam to Huntsman’s operations in Geismar, Louisiana, the US-based industrial gases producer said on Tuesday.

The reformer should start operations in early 2020, Air Products said. It will produce 6.5m cubic feet/day (mcf/day) of carbon monoxide (CO), 50mcf/day of hydrogen and up to 50,000 lb/hour (23,000 kg/hour) of steam. The reformer can be expanded to produce more CO.

Under a long-term agreement, Air Products will build, own and operate the reformer and supply products to the Huntsman operations, the company said. Air Products will lease the land from Huntsman.

The reformer will also be connected to Air Products’s Gulf Coast hydrogen network, which stretches for 600 miles (965 km) from the Houston Ship Channel to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Tony Hankins, president of Huntsman Polyurethanes said: “The reliability and environmental performance of the new industrial gases plant from Air Products will be an important foundation in supporting the delivery of our North American Polyurethanes strategy. As a business, we are focused on rapidly building our downstream footprint and capabilities. This strategic shift can only be achieved with a strong upstream asset position at our Geismar MDI facility.”
