SINGAPORE (ICIS)–Chandra Asri Petrochemical (CAP) will build a plastic asphalt road at its production site in Cilegon, as part of its commitment to support Indonesia’s goal to reduce 70% of plastic waste by 2025, the chemical producer said.

The plastic asphalt road made of regular asphalt mixed with 5-6% plastic waste weighing around 3 tonnes, is stretched on a 6.372 square metre area in Banten province.

“CAP is using plastic bag waste, from high density polyethylene (HDPE), in the asphalt mix,” the company said in a statement dated 3 July.

CAP is Indonesia’s largest integrated petrochemical company producing olefins and polyolefins.

“We are fully committed to sustainability and eager to contribute to the effort of reducing plastic waste in Indonesia,” CAP president director Erwin Ciputra said.

“Mixing plastic waste with asphalt can be one of the solutuions to plastic waste problems in Indonesia,” he said.

It is also working with the Indonesian Olefin, Aromatic and Plastic Industry Association (INAPLAS) and the Indonesian Plastic Recycle Association (ADUPI) “to provide scrap plastic for the asphalt mix”, the company said.

CAP reported on 25 June a first-quarter 2018 net profit of $73.6m, down 31.7% year on year, largely on higher cost of petrochemical feedstock naphtha, and lower contribution from butadiene (BD).

Net revenues for the March quarter increased 10% to $695.3m, aided by higher average sales prices of products.
