VIENNA (ICIS)--There is expected to be limited impact on the European acrylic acid (AA) supply/demand balance from the new plant for Nippon Shokubai in Antwerp, sources said on the sidelines of the European Petrochemical Association meeting in Vienna.
The plant has a capacity of 100,000 tonnes/year, with a downstream superabsorbent polymer (SAP) of the same amount.
As the majority of the capacity will be for captive use, there is only expected to be limited volumes available for the merchant market.
However, as Nippon Shokubai is a buyer of AA this will make some more capacity available.
There is not expected to be any other new plants in Europe in the coming years, with the current prices unattractive for further investment.
This is a concern to players, given the steady growth expected and the aging assets in the region.
