2017, with shipments exceeding Yen 1.6 trillion ($14.34 bn) during the year
that reached a new record high. Every segment virtually recorded a year on
year growth in sales. Numbers for the Jan-Apr 2018 indicate that this
positivity will continue over 2019. Though local demand has been stable due
to an improving economy and innovative new products, the growth in overall
sales was attributed to record high numbers of foreign tourists consuming
Japanese brands. Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry reported
that sales of personal care products in the country in 2017 increased by
6.9% year-on-year. Only men's skin care products and hair care items sales
dropped over 2017. Sales of moisturisers and special care products both
increased by around 16%, while facial washes and cleansers increased by over
9% year-on-year. Yomiuri newspaper reported that Kose, Pola and Shiseido
marketed a total of Yen 93.9 bn ($844.61 M) in beauty products to tourists
in 2017, an increase by 80% from Yen 50.5 bn ($454.24 M) in 2015. Original
