LONDON (ICIS)–Low water levels on the Rhine river have resulted in freight rates for time chartered 5,000-tonne barges rising to €12,000 in recent weeks, according to a shipping source on Friday.
The source said it had been speaking to players in the barge markets and expressed surprise at such a rate, saying that this was close to the freight for a full small-sized chemical tanker.
“It shows how under pressure the barge market is,” the source said.
“You have to employ around five [barges] to move product which keeps barges busy. The cost becomes twice or three times as much,” it added.
