AFPM ’19: Renewable diesel growth a concern for US crude glycerine buyers

SAN ANTONIO (ICIS)–US glycerine markets are starting to worry about the growing renewable diesel production, sources said on Monday.

Most traditional biodiesel plants produce by-product crude glycerine at a 1:10 ratio.

The growing renewable diesel sector is a concern for the glycerine markets, as renewable diesel does not produce any glycerine as a by-product.

If renewable diesel gains more market share in the US, displacing traditional biodiesel, a shortage of crude glycerine will affect the crude and refined glycerine markets.

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel, produced from renewable resources.

The most commonly used feedstocks are rapeseed, soy and palm oil.

The sources were speaking on the sidelines of this year’s International Petrochemical Conference (IPC).

Hosted by the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM), the IPC takes place on 24-26 March in San Antonio, Texas.
