SAN ANTONIO (ICIS)–Global styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) markets are soft amid sluggish demand and are not currently a major demand driver for butadiene (BD), sources said on Monday.
Weakness in Asia is also weighing on automotive sectors and the overall economy as players in that region adopt a wait-and-see stance ahead of trade decisions.
As a result, this year has not seen the typical post-Lunar New Year pick-up in demand, which often sets a tone for the year, sources said.
The sources were speaking on the sidelines of the International Petrochemical Conference (IPC).
“China is on hold,” a source said.
Spot SBR activity appears reduced from last year on Asia softness as operations pull back in that region.
Major North American SBR producers include Dynasol, Goodyear Tire & Rubber and Lion Elastomers.
Hosted by the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM), the IPC takes place on 24-26 March in San Antonio, Texas.
