Feiplastic ’19: Plastics show kicks off in Brazil with sustainability in focus

SAO PAULO (ICIS)–Latin America’s largest plastics trade show Feiplastic opened on Monday drawing delegates from around the world and featuring innovation and sustainability as the main themes of the event.

Brazil’s petrochemicals maker Braskem, which was displaying some of its bio-based products, said Feiplastic was an important channel to promote the concept of a circular economy in which production and disposal of plastics are viewed as equally important.

The Brazilian company was displaying some of its new products, including a stand-up pouch packaging made solely from polyethylene (PE), which Braskem said made it highly recyclable.

Some samples of packaging already made from recycled PE were also on display at the event, Braskem said.

Eastman, Evonik, LANXESS and Solvay were among the other companies promoting new resins and other materials that they said could be used in the production of more sustainable products.

Solvay announced the launching of parts that would be used in an electric bicycle.

The parts were made from specialty polymers that were already being used in the production of more technically demanding automotive parts, it said.

LANXESS for its part was highlighting the use of two lines of nylon in turbo-charged engines, which are smaller than regular engines and reduce the overall weight of automobiles, making them more fuel-efficient.

Feira Internacional do Plastico (Feiplastic) takes place on 22-26 April in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
