SAO PAULO (ICIS)–Brazilian farmers are planting more fruits and vegetables, a trend that is increasing demand for plastic products used in greenhouses and mulch films, an official with LyondellBasell said.

Brazilian farmers use such plastic technology to make their fields more productive, said Gustavo Perez, regional director LATAM, Advanced Polymer Solutions, LyondellBasell.

He made his comments on the sidelines of the Feiplastic trade show.

The rise in fruit production is also causing exports to increase, Perez said. This trend is raising demand for plastics used to make specialty packaging.

Such packaging has oxygen barriers that extend the shelf life of the fruit being exported, he said.

The Feira Internacional do Plastic (Feiplastic) takes place on 22-26 April in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
