HOUSTON (ICIS)--LyondellBasell’s new propylene oxide (PO) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) plant in the US Gulf Coast has surpassed 20% completion, with work shifting to vertical assembly, the chemicals major announced on Monday.
The Channelview plant in Texas will have a capacity of 470,000 tonnes/year of PO and 1m tonnes/year of TBA. It is expected to start up at the end of 2021.
LyondellBasell is also building an associated ethers unit, which converts TBA to oxyfuels, at its Bayport complex in Pasadena, Texas.
“As our infrastructure work wraps up, we’ll soon begin to see the plants emerge from both construction sites as these large pieces of equipment are installed,” said Joe Dorsch, PO/TBA project director.
The first pieces of structural steel are being installed at both sites, and installation of tanks, cooling towers and the flare will begin at Channelview.
LyondellBasell’s $2.4bn PO/TBA project is expected to generate $400m-450m in earnings per year.
