BRUSSELS (ICIS)–Procter & Gamble (P&G) will start using Indorama Ventures’ Circular Plastics resin, obtained via chemical reprocessing, in its Pantene hair care products in the UK from Q4 2020, the company announced on Thursday.

Making the announcement at the Petcore Annual Conference in Brussels, Belgium, P&G said it will be using Indorama’s recycled resin in its clear Pantene bottles.

The move brings chemical recycled PET feedstocks into the European market much sooner than many expected, with a fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) taking the lead as an early adopter.

“The challenges for chemical recycling remain reaching an industrial scale at a cost competitive price” said Helen McGeough, ICIS Senior Analyst for Plastics Recycling.

“This initial announcement does not give any answers to these questions but does show the commitment of major brands to support the development of alternative recycled or renewable feedstocks in their quest to fulfil their pledges,” McGeough added.

Earlier in the day at the conference, P&G announced they would start using digital watermarks in their Lenor branded fabric softener bottles in Germany by October.

The Petcore Annual Conference runs from 5-6th February 2020 in Brussels, Belgium.
