Dow Jones falls 4.61%, enters correction as chems plummet

HOUSTON (ICIS)–The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by 4.61% on Thursday as the index entered a correction amid fears of the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19).

Indices enter corrections when they decline by more than 10% from a recent high.

US stock markets have been falling sharply almost daily because of concerns about the coronavirus. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by more than 3% on Monday and Tuesday.

The declines came after the US Centers for Disease Control (CD) reported what could be the first domestic case of coronavirus. The person had no relevant travel experience or exposure to a patient with the disease.

Brazil’s Health Ministry confirmed the first case of coronavirus in Sao Paulo. The patient had returned from travelling to Italy.

The country is now monitoring 132 suspected cases of the disease.

Every US-listed stock followed by ICIS fell on Thursday, with many declining by more than 5%. The following table shows their performance.
