HOUSTON (ICIS)–US chemical companies can apply measures to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (Corvid-19), but it is essential that they are able to maintain operations, the American Chemistry Council (ACC) said.

“Many ACC member companies have instituted telework policies to reduce the number of employees travelling to work and interacting with co-workers,” the US-based industry group said in a Tuesday letter to US President Donald Trump and state governors.

“However, the operation of manufacturing plants cannot be done remotely and requires the day-to-day presence of highly trained personnel. This also includes ensuring access to critical supplies and transportation systems so our industry can continue to produce and deliver essential products.”

Chemical manufacturing is a $553bn enterprise that touches nearly all aspects of the US economy, with 96% of all manufactured goods relying on chemistry, the ACC said.

“The role of chemistry is particularly important today as chemicals enable countless products that will be needed to support good hygiene and treat those who are infected with the coronavirus in the weeks and months ahead.”

The ACC listed the following examples:

  • Chemical biocides and disinfectants are active ingredients in cleaning products.
  • Single-use plastic products and packaging help prevent contamination of food, medicine, personal care and medical products.
  • Personal hygiene products, soaps and other antiseptics such as isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and hydrogen peroxide rely on chemical production.

Plastics and chemicals keep medical environments and treatments sanitary, safe and effective, the ACC said.

Examples include:

  • Polycarbonate (PC) in syringes, surgical instruments and IV components;
  • Biocides and chlorine to disinfect surfaces and keep drinking water clean;
  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in medical tubing, blood and IV bags;
  • Polypropylene (PP) in medical-grade personal protective equipment including masks, gowns and goggles; and
  • Chemicals in over-the-counter and prescription medications.

“All segments of society have a role to play to help limit the spread of coronavirus and protect public health, especially those who are most vulnerable,” the ACC said. “The chemical industry can make a valuable contribution by applying prudent measures to prevent the spread of infection at our sites, while also maintaining production.”
