SINGAPORE (ICIS)–PETRONAS Chemicals Group (PCG) is building a new 60,000 tonne/year melamine plant in Gurun, Kedah, the Malaysian producer said on Wednesday.

The new plant is expected to come on stream in 2024 and will make PCG the sole melamine producer in southeast Asia, the company said in a statement.

PCG, through its wholly owned subsidiary, PETRONAS Chemicals Fertiliser Kedah (PCFK), will be using the urea produced from PCFK as the feedstock to produce melamine.

“By housing the plant within the vicinity of PCFK, we will be able to maximise the overall value through the integration of feedstock and utilities with the existing PCFK facility,” said Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, managing director/CEO of PCG.

Financial details of the project were not disclosed.
