SINGAPORE (ICIS)–China will aim for carbon neutrality by 2060 and hit peak emissions before 2030, President Xi Jinping told the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in a video link.

“The global pandemic warns us that mankind needs a self-revolution to speed up greener development and lifestyles,” Xi said.

“The Paris Agreement represents the megatrend on the global shift to low carbon, and every country needs to take decisive steps.”

The Paris Agreement on climate change signed in 2015 aims to reduce global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

“China will increase its contribution and take more active policies and measures on that,” Xi said.

China is currently the world’s biggest source of CO2, responsible for around 28% of global emissions.

Xi’s announcement is deemed a significant step in the fight against climate change.
