LONDON (ICIS)–South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering on Tuesday revealed it had won Approval in Principle (AiP) from UK-based vessel classification agency Lloyd’s Register for an ammonia-powered “super-large container ship”.
The company’s joint development project with Lloyds Marine and engine manufacturer MAN Energy Solutions for a 23,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity vessel is scheduled for commercialisation in 2025.
The firm disclosed it was in charge of the basic design of the ammonia propulsion system, and Man Energy Solutions was in charge of the development of the ammonia dual fuel propulsion engine.
Lloyd’s Register, which in late September awarded Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) AiP for its ammonia-fuelled tanker design, was responsible for assessing the risk and suitability of the system.
“With this basic certification for ammonia propulsion vessels, we are taking one step closer to decarbonisation, which is the biggest goal of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering,” said the division’s head, Oh-ik Kwon.
