LONDON (ICIS)–ICIS and Carbon Minds have launched a tool to identify emissions for 71 chemicals and plastics, providing emission data by supplier, plant and product.

The tool, called Supplier Carbon Footprints, could help companies to manage and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their supply chains, including Scope 3 emissions, said ICIS and Carbon Minds.

Scope 3 emissions include those that occur in company’s value chain, and therefore harder to abate.

Scope 1 are direct emissions from owned or controlled sources, while Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed.

Germany-based Carbon Minds specialises in the environmental impact modelling of emissions in the chemicals and plastics sectors.

“This is a huge step forward for chemical companies in managing Scope 3 emissions. It will provide the information to create supply chains with lower climate impacts and find the right suppliers to achieve this goal,” said Arne Katelhon, CEO at Carbon Minds.

“Companies will further be able to use the data to engage existing suppliers and assist them to implement sustainability initiatives.”
