MUMBAI (ICIS)–India’s Thirumalai Chemicals Ltd (TCL) plans to build an integrated plant that will produce 180,000 tonnes/year phthalic anhydride (PA) at its complex at Dahej in the western Gujarat state, a company source said on Tuesday.

The project, which is also expected to yield 30,000 tonnes/year of fine & specialty chemicals, will be implemented in two phases, the source said, without disclosing investment details.

TCL expects to bring first phase on stream about two years after receiving all the necessary approvals for the project.

“Work has commenced on the design and engineering of the plants,” the source said.

Raw materials for the integrated plant will be sourced primarily from within Gujarat, he added.

TCL expects to market its products in the western and northern regions of India, while also targeting exports.

The project is expected to replace huge PA imports and drive downstream growth in India, the source said.

India’s consumption of PA and its derivative products such as colorants, polymer additives, fine chemicals reinforced polymers is still very low as compared with other countries while demand growth has been strong, the TCL source said.

The company has a recently completed 60,000 tonne/year PA plant at the Dahej complex but start-up was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This plant is expected to come on stream in the next few months, the company source said.

TCL, which is one of the two major PA producers in India, currently operates a 144,000 tonne/year PA plant at Ranipet in the southern Tamil Nadu state.

The company also produces maleic anhydride, and its derivatives, plasticisers, esters through its subsidiaries in India, and has manufacturing operations in Malaysia.
