LONDON (ICIS)–Repsol is to invest €657m at its Sines facilities in Portugal to build two units to produce 300,000 tonnes/year of linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and 300,000 tonnes/year of polypropylene (PP), the Spanish energy and petrochemicals major said on Friday.

The two units are expected to start up in 2025.

Feedstock from the two units will come from Repsol’s cracker at the site, which has capacity to produce 410,000  tonnes/year of ethylene, 215,000 tonnes/year of propylene, and 50,000 tonnes/year of butadiene (BD), according to ICIS data.

According to Repsol, the facilities can produce up to 1m tonnes/year when other petrochemicals are also included.

Sines is located 150km south of Lisbon, in the Atlantic coast; the company said “new logistic facilities”, including new rail connections, would be developed but further details were not provided.

The company said the Portuguese government had determined the Sines’ investment was of national interest, grating it tax incentives worth “up to €63m”.

Repsol operates the Sines Industrial Complex, which also produces liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and lubricants.
