BASF, INEOS and Solvay among winners of Responsible Care Awards, for COVID-19 response

LONDON (ICIS)–BASF, INEOS and Solvay are among winners of the 2021 Responsible Care Awards from the the European chemicals trade group Cefic for their initiatives aimed at fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

The industry’s Responsible Care initiative can often be seen as a journey, said Cefic’s president Martin Brudermuller, also the CEO at Germany’s chemicals major BASF.

In an online awards ceremony, Brudermuller said the Responsible Care initiative was a global effort, tailored to local conditions.

Brudermuller highlighted the digitalisation efforts of companies in Europe that have allowed the sharing of benchmark Responsible Care data.

He also praised sector companies’ efforts to support others outside Europe to match Responsible Care goals.

In Europe, 4,000 companies are signed up to the Responsible Care initiative. The 2021 awards attracted 70 applications from 15 countries.

“It gives me confidence to see the level of engagement of the European chemical industry as well as their team spirit in supporting communities and improving operations” Brudermuller said.

The awards winners for all categories were:

Supporting health in COVID-19 times: BASF and INEOS Hygenics; Special Commendation for Solvay.

Ecosystem preservation: Solvay.

En route to climate neutrality: Kemianteollisuus, Evonik, and BASF.

– Safe and sustainable – from design phase to use phase: Dow Europe and SABIC; Special Commendations for Borealis, Covestro, and Domo.
