LONDON (ICIS)–Swiss-based Smartenergy has received consent for the construction of a 200MW renewable hydrogen plant in Sardinia, Italy, the company said on 12 October.
The Sassari Provincial Industrial Consortium consented to the development, construction, and operation of a renewable hydrogen plant to be located in the Porto Torres industrial complex in the northeast of Sardinia.
The facility is due to have a capacity of 200MW of renewable hydrogen production and is a three-phase project that will be completed in 2030, Smartenergy said in a press release.
“The hydrogen project Porto Torres project will create a solar+wind+green [renewable] hydrogen ecosystem in the industrial district of Porto Torres, taking advantage of existing and under-development renewable energy sources with a total capacity of up to 500MW,” the press release said.
The project is expected to supply a blend of renewable hydrogen to local sectors as well as potential for a facility to produce renewable methanol for export and e-fuels for the aviation and shipping sector.
Estimated delivery dates will be between 2026 and 2030, with permitting activities due to start in the first half of 2023.
