Hystar to supply 5MW electrolysers to Polish Polenergia

LONDON (ICIS)–The Polish energy company Polenergia for the supply of a 5MW electrolyser for Polenergia’s H2HubNS project, Hystar announced on 7 June.

The electrolyser will be delivered in 2024 with a long-term maintenance contract.

The project is located at the Nowa Sarzyna cogeneration plant in the northwest of Poland. It plans to produce green hydrogen that will be used in two refuelling stations.

In 2022, the Polish National Centre for Research and Development announced a grant of Zl95m (€21m) for the project, as a subsidy for research and development.

At the time, Polenergia had announced the aim of the project would be to use green hydrogen to produce renewable aviation fuel.

According to the ministry of climate and environment, Poland currently produces approximately 1.3 million tons/year of hydrogen, of which only a small share comes from renewable sources.

ICIS analytics forecasts show that by 2030, hydrogen demand in Poland could reach approximately 30TWh/year and by 2050 the figure is expected to increase to 78TWh/year.

Forecasts also show that Poland is expected to meet demand through supply and internal production, with total supply set to reach 30TWh by 2030.

However, a supply shortfall of approximately 28TWh is expected by 2050.

The Polish hydrogen strategy for 2030 outlines objectives regarding the implementation of hydrogen technologies in the power and heating sector, switching to low- and zero-emission hydrogen, as well as building five hydrogen valleys by 2030.

By 2030, the country seeks to produce a minimum of 2GW of hydrogen from low- and zero-emission sources, and the country also seeks to have installed 2,000 hydrogen production facilities as well as around 32 hydrogen stations.
