Chemical industry steps up to battle Covid-19 with massive sanitiser production

The coronavirus pandemic has put a spotlight on the critical nature of the chemical industry in human health and safety.

Many chemicals companies have stepped up to help tackle the outbreak through the production of key raw materials for hand sanitisers as well as the finished product itself, with a high proportion being distributed free to hospitals and healthcare institutions that so desperately need it.

Meanwhile, the industry continues to produce polymers such as polypropylene (PP) for key personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks, surgical gowns and antibacterial wipes; polyethylene (PE) for food and equipment packaging; chlorine bleach for disinfectants and surfactants for soaps and other cleaning products; and polycarbonate (PC) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) for clear protective screens.
