Q1 auto sales rise just 1.9% in world’s ‘Top 7′ markets
4 out of 5 cars are now bought with credit or leased, with an average term of 5 1/2 years. This tactic essentially buys sales from the future, as a car sold today won’t be replaced before 2020. In addition, an increasing proportion of sales are now to subprime buyers, whose default rates are alarmingly high.
BRIJ auto markets continue to struggle
Q1 showed little sign of improvement in the world’s second-tier auto markets – Brazil, Russia, India, Japan. In total, their sales used to equal those of the EU, the world’s 3rd largest market. But Q1 volumes saw a 16% decline versus 2014 levels
NPE '15: Lighter autos boosts plastic demand
Increasingly, automobile producers are relying on plastics to reduce the weight of their vehicles. The American Chemistry Council (ACC) estimates that each vehicle contains an average of $3,500 worth of chemicals, an amount that has increased, in part, because companies are replacing metals with plastics that weigh less.

The primary outlet for propylene is polypropylene (PP), which accounts for nearly two-thirds of global consumption. Other important derivatives include acrylonitrile (ACN), acrylic acid, oxo-alcohols, propylene oxide (PO), and cumene. Propylene is also used to make high-octane gasoline blendstocks and can also be blended into propane.
In this month’s ICIS Special Report, Chris Barker talks to Helena Strathearn about the recent opportunities for European exporters in the Turkish polyvinyl chloride (PVC) market.
