China SM capacity vs global SM capacity, 2014-2016

China’s SM capacity stood at 7.157m tonnes, which was 21.8% of the global capacity at 32.83m tonnes in 2014. By 2016, the Chinese SM capacity is expected to reach 7.937m tonnes, increasing this proportion to 23.9%.

In line with this increase in domestic capacity, ICIS estimates Chinese styrene import volumes to fall to 3.56m tonnes in 2016 from 3.74m tonnes in 2015, a decline of 5% year on year. With domestic production estimated to account for slightly more than 60% of China’s styrene supply market as the country becomes more self-reliant, international market players are now keen on monitoring domestic price drivers and market developments in the CFR China and Asia markets.

With domestic data and insights on styrene gathered from industry experts, the ICIS China Styrene Annual Report provides an in-depth analysis of the dynamic domestic China styrene market developments, as well as an outlook for each major demand segment and upcoming price drivers up until 2017.
