Market Overview: China Acrylate Esters Annual Study

ICIS has recently launched the latest version of the China Acylate Esters Annual Study, an in-depth report of the year’s developments and hot topics, with a supply/demand outlook for 2015.

The import volume of butyl acrylate is China totalled 25.6660 tonnes during January - July, up by 14, 980 tonnes or 140.26% year on year, while the export volume during the period was 32, 420 tonnes, up by 11.420 tonnes or 54.38% year on year.

Meanwhile, the import volume of acrylic acid in China from January to July reached 24,910 tonnes, showing an increase of 7,430 tonnes or 42.51% year on year. The export volume during the period was 41,790 tonnes, showing a decrease of 62,000 or 59.74% year on year.

The capacity expansion of butyl acrylate in 2014 is expected to be 860,000 tonnes, increasing the total capacity in China to about 2.01m tonnes. In line with these expansions, the additional capacity of acrylic acid is expected to be 990,000 tonnes in 2014, driving the total number up to around 2.99m tonnes.

The increase in butyl acrylate supply was higher than that of demand, leading to a situation of oversupply, whch then dragged down the prices. This resulted in losses for domestic suppliers looking to sell in the domestic market, and forced them to open up the export market. However, the export volume of acrylic acid slumped on a year-on-year basis as a result of supply shortage in the domestic market, amid outage at a major factory due to an accident.
