LONDON (ICIS)--Shell’s gas-to-liquid (GTL) project in Qatar has been officially inaugurated by the Emir of Qatar, the Anglo-Dutch oil major said on Tuesday.

Pearl GTL, the largest GTL plant in the world, is a joint venture with Qatar Petroleum and is located in Ras Laffan, 80km (50 miles) north of Doha.

“Pearl GTL is a tribute to the remarkable partnership between Qatar Petroleum and Shell. The inauguration of Pearl GTL represents an historic milestone for Shell, and for our industry as a whole. It marks the culmination of five years of project delivery, and over 35 years of gas-to-liquids technology development at Shell,” said Shell CEO Peter Voser.

Shell said that when the plant is fully operational it will have a capacity of 140,000 bbl/day of GTL gasoil, naphtha, kerosene, n-paraffin and lubricants base oils.

The plant will also produce 120,000 bbl/day of natural gas liquids and ethane, it added.

Shell said in June that the plant will be fully operational by mid-2012.
