HOUSTON (ICIS)--US-based Chevron Phillips Chemical (CP Chem) broke ground on Wednesday on its 1-hexene plant at its Cedar Bayou chemical complex in Texas.
Construction on the 250,000 tonne/year facility has already started, and it should start up in the first quarter of 2014, the company said. The company did not release the financial details of the plant.
S&B Engineers and Constructors will engineer and build the plant using CP Chem’s on-purpose 1-hexene technology.
“The new 1-hexene unit at the Cedar Bayou facility will enjoy significant advantages in infrastructure, feedstock availability and operational expertise,” the company said. “1-hexene is a critical component used in the manufacture of polyethylene [PE], a plastic resin commonly converted in film, pipe, detergent bottles and food and beverage containers.”
