HOUSTON (ICIS)--US methanol imports in June rose 23% year on year because of more shipments from Venezuela, Trinidad & Tobago and Canada, according to data released on Thursday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

US methanol imports totalled 698.88m litres, compared with 567.33m litres in June 2012.

Converting litres to metric tonnes, the US imported 559,104 tonnes, up from 453,867 tonnes in June last year.

Shipments from Venezuela and Trinidad - historically the largest sources of US imports - accounted for more than 70% of the gain.

Venezuela’s shipments to the US totalled 157.69m litres, up from 104.69m litres in June 2012. Trinidad, by far the largest source of US methanol imports, sent 426.01m litres to the US, compared with 386m litres in the same month last year.

Imports from another major source, Equatorial Guinea, totalled 52.16m litres in June, down slightly compared with 52.22m litres shipped to the US a year earlier.
