HOUSTON (ICIS)–SABIC plans to close its plant in Washington, West Virginia, as part of a move to consolidate its acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) operations in the US, the company said on Thursday.

The plant has an ABS capacity of 75,000 tonnes/year, according to ICIS plants and projects. SABIC did not specify when the plant would end operations.

Some of the plants ABS operations will be transferred to Ottawa, Illinois, and Bay St Louis, Mississippi, during the second quarter of 2015, SABIC said.

ABS capacity at Ottawa is 215,000 tonnes/year and Bay St Louis is 125,000 tonnes/year.

Over the next 18 months, SABIC employees will continue to work at the site to help with the transition, the company said.

SABIC has also signed an initial purchase agreement for the possible sale of the Washington property, the company said. The company may build operations at the site, although SABIC did not name the company or elaborate on the operations.
