US caustic soda exports down in November - ITC

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US caustic soda exports were up 24% in November from the year-ago period, according to figures released Thursday by the International Trade Commission (ITC).

Month-on-month caustic soda exports fell 19% in November, down to  to 427,775 tonnes from 527,306 tonnes in October, according to the ITC figures. But they but remain up 10% for the first 11 months of the year, according to the ITC figures.

US caustic soda imports were down slightly from October, at 106,845 tonnes from 107,441 tonnes the previous month, but up 20% from the 88,717 tonnes received in November 2012.

US exports were up 22% for the first 11 months of the year. 

Brazil was the US’s largest caustic soda export market and took 141,934 tonnes, down from 192,068 tonnes in October and 148,042 tonnes in November 2012, according to the ITC figures.

Canada, the second-largest market for US caustic soda, took 30,411 tonnes, down from 42,160 in October and 31,556 in November 2012.

The top US export markets and their deliveries during the first 11 months of 2013 include Brazil (1.58m tones), Canada (493,430 tonnes), Australia (322,429 tonnes), Mexico (316,177), and No. 5 Suriname, (282,770 tonnes).

Major US producers include Shintech, Dow Chemical, Oxychem, Olin, Axiall and Westlake.
