LONDON (ICIS)--Leading Algerian fertilizer producer Fertial has issued a substantial sales tender for up to 300,000 tonnes of ammonia for loading from the end of next month, a market source revealed on Wednesday.

The tender for 200,000-300,000 tonnes of ammonia will close on 16 February and bids will be opened on 17 February, the market participant confirmed today.

At least 10 companies are understood to have been contacted by the vendor, including Norway's Yara, Spain's Fertiberia and Paris-based Transammonia (Trammo).

The first cargoes are expected to load in Arzew and Annaba in late March and the final shipments in September or October.

However, those dates are dependent on the issuing of government licences under a controversial and complicated export authorisation process that was introduced in 2013 and has already delayed loadings at Fertial and other major nitrogen fertilizer manufacturer Sorfert.

Under the new process, companies wishing to export ammonia or urea from Algeria must now apply in person at the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Defence in the capital, Algiers.

The applications must include specific details of the buyer, vessel, destination, end-user and purpose, with the matter complicated by traders often not knowing well in advance where such cargoes will be delivered.
