HOUSTON (ICIS)--Oxea has started basic engineering for a 2-ethylhexanol (2-EH) and an n-propanol unit at its production facility in Bay City, Texas, the company said on Friday.
Both units are currently scheduled to come on stream in late 2016. The company did not disclose the capacity of the additions.
This will be Oxea’s first 2-EH facility in North America. Currently, Oxea produces 2-EH at its industrial complex in Oberhausen, Germany. The company already produces n-propanol at the Bay City plant.
Oxea said that elements of the basic engineering work will also be used for the construction of its Asian oxo chemicals platform in Duqm, Oman. Oxea was acquired by the Oman Oil Company in late 2013.
The company said that there is market demand for a 2-EH unit in Americas. Oxea Managing Director Member Miguel Mantas said that once it is on line, the new unit would allow 2-EH customers in the Americas to benefit from “enhanced delivery capability”.
Usages for the oxo-alcohol 2-EH include the production of the plasticizer dioctyl phthalate (DOP), cetane improver 2-ethylhexyl nitrate (2-EHN) and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, which is used in coatings and finishes. It is also used as a solvent in paints.
Current 2-EH producers in the US include BASF at its facility in Freeport, Texas, and Eastman Chemical in Longview, Texas.
