Borouge to start new cracker in few weeks - CEOSHANGHAI (ICIS)–United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) Borouge will start up its new 1.5m tonne/year ethane cracker in Abu Dhabi” in the weeks to come”, CEO Wim Roels said at the sidelines of Chinaplas, a four-day plastics and machinery exhibition that ended on Saturday.

He declined to comment on specific timing but said the cracker will be started up first and the derivative plants will be started up one after another.

The cracker and six derivate plants — two polyethylene (PE) plants with a combined capacity of  1.08m tonnes/year; two polypropylene (PP) units with a combined capacity of 960,000 tonnes/year; a 350,000 tonne/year low density PE (LDPE) unit, and a 80,000 tonne/year cross-linked PE plant – is the third phase of Borouge’s petrochemical project in Abu Dhabi, known as Borouge 3.

Part of the supply from its LDPE plant will be fed into the cross-linked PE plant to produce resin compound for wire and cable applications, Roels told ICIS in an interview.

“Borouge and one of our parent companies, Borealis, we have a strong position in wire and cable business globally, building this high pressure line was really to support this position, and to allow us to grow our wire and cable presence in Asia Pacific,” he said.

“So the priority for us is to produce LDPE for the wire and cable business,” he said.

But its new LDPE plant would produce a balance of wire and cable and film grades, said Roels who envisages the LDPE plant to continue producing LDPE film grades for some years.

Borouge is a joint venture between Austria’s head-quartered Borealis and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (Adnoc).
