US March PET exports rise 21%, imports increase 10% year-on-year

NEW YORK (ICIS)–US polyethylene terephthalate (PET) exports for March rose 21% while imports gained 10% year-on-year, according to data made available by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on Friday.

Year-on-year exports increased to 30,375 tonnes in March from 25,162 tonnes the same month last year. Month-on-month exports, meanwhile, jumped 34% from 22,632 tonnes in February.

Canada, Mexico and Argentina were the top three destinations for US PET. Collectively they accounted for 58% of total March exports.

Year-on-year imports were 10% higher at 44,749 tonnes in March from 40,696 tonnes the same month last year. Month-on-month imports were up 25% from 35,933 tonnes in February.

Canada and Mexico were the top two suppliers to the US. Together they accounted for 54% of total March imports at 12,655 tonnes and 11,588 tonnes, respectively.

PET is primarily used in plastic drinking bottles and in textiles.

PET producers in the US include DAK Americas, Indorama Ventures, Mossi & Ghisolfi (M&G) and Nan Ya Plastics.
