The Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO could start making balancing prices publicly available from July, an ESO representative told ICIS on Thursday.

These would be published with a one -week delay, Nikola Gabrovski, an ESO analyst, said.

The transmission system operator launched a new balancing market on 1 June as a key step to liberalise the market and launch an electricity exchange ( see EDEM 15 May 2014 ) but for now only registered market participant have access to the prices.

There are 31 registered balancing groups in total, while 47 market participants such as big producers, consumers and traders which transit electricity balance their own positions, Gabrovski said.

These groups match electricity supply and demand across the electricity grid and trade any shortfalls or surplus.

“[Finally] all market participants are being balanced and we have suppliers of balancing energy. Before that, NEK was the only one who supplied electricity for balancing,” Gabrovski said during a presentation.

NEK is Bulgaria’s incumbent supplier of electricity.

ESO is also preparing to launch intra-day schedules which will be used for the planned exchange’s intra-day market. Irina Peltegova
