US CP Chem to expand alpha olefins capacity at Cedar Bayou plantHOUSTON (ICIS)–Chevron Phillips Chemical plans to expand alpha olefins capacity at its Cedar Bayou plant in Baytown, Texas, the US-based producer said on Monday.

The project should be completed in July 2015, and it will increase capacity by 100,000 tonnes/year.

S&B Engineers and Constructors will handle the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC).

The company’s board of directors approved the project, and it received an environmental permit from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), it said.

Normal alpha olefins are used as polyethylene (PE) co-monomers. They are also used to make synthetic motor oils, lubricants and automotive additives.

With shale gas dominating the headlines and ethane a major talking point in the petrochemical industry, ICIS editors in Houston are closely monitoring the situation. See the ICIS special report on shale, ethane and US ethane exports at ICIS News TV.
