US May PG exports rise 29% and imports triple year-on-year

NEW YORK (ICIS)--US propylene glycol (PG) exports for May increased by 29% year-on-year and imports surged in the same period according to trade data made available this week by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

Year-on-year exports increased to 10,131 tonnes in May 2014 from 7,881 tonnes May 2013. However, month-on-month exports fell 17% from 12,150 tonnes in April.

The majority of US PG exports went to Singapore, Mexico and Canada, which collectively accounted for 71% of total May exports.

Exports to all three countries increased year-on-year. Exports to Singapore almost tripled to 3,518 tonnes in May 2014 from 1,245 tonnes in May 2013. Exports to Mexico rose to 2,247 tonnes from 1,962 tonnes, while exports to Canada were up slightly to 1,383 tonnes from 1,370 tonnes in May 2014 from May 2013.

The volume of PG imports in May was not large but reflected a significant jump from last year. May imports tripled to 429 tonnes in May 2014 from 140 tonnes in May 2013. In contrast, month-on-month imports dropped 42% from 734 tonnes in April.

PG imports largely came from Asia, with Korea accounting for 57% and China accounting for 27% of total May imports. The US increased the volume of imports it took in from both countries.  In May 2014, imports from Korea tripled to 243 tonnes from 79 tonnes a year ago. Meanwhile, China supplied 117 tonnes to the US in May 2014, compared to 0 tonnes in May last year.

PG is a feedstock for unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), cosmetics and personal care products, functional fluids and antifreezes, liquid detergents and dog food.

US producers include Archer Daniels Midland, Dow Chemical, Huntsman, LyondellBasell, and Lonza.
