HOUSTON (ICIS)--Elemental Minerals has appointed mining veteran John Sanders as new managing director the Australia-based fertilizer producer announced on Thursday.
Company officials said Sanders is replacing Iain Macpherson who will continue with the company as a non-executive director. Sanders was previously employed by Elemental both as a general manager and executive director from 2009-2012.
Sanders has over 30 years of experience in African exploration and mining projects. Prior to joining Elemental, he was vice president of exploration for UraMin, CEO of Niger Uranium and served as regional exploration manager for East and West Africa at Anglogold Ashanti.
“During this time, Mr Sanders was integral to the development of the Sintoukola Project in the Republic of Congo and was a key member of the Elemental team, and was instrumental in the rapid progress of the company. The board is delighted that Mr Sanders has agreed to re-join the company as the managing director given his significant knowledge and experience in the project,” said Elemental.
The Perth-based producer is currently focused on developing the Sintoukola Potash Project located in Congo-Brazzaville with expectations that the $1.85bn project could start production by 2017. The conventional underground mine has an anticipated life cycle of 23 years and once fully operational in 2018 could have a capacity of 2m tonnes/year.
