SINGAPORE (ICIS)–China’s Sinopec Yangzi Petrochemical’s No 1 aromatics unit in Nanjing is running at 40% capacity after a restart on 12 September following a planned turnaround that began on 29 July, a company source said late on Tuesday.

The company plans to ramp up the production rate in the near future, he said.

The No 1 aromatics unit has a benzene capacity of 390,000 tonnes/year from its reformer and toluene disproportionation (TDP) unit; while it can also produce 300,000 tonnes/year of toluene and 650,000 tonnes/year of mixed xylene (MX), the source said.

An estimated toluene production loss during the shutdown stood at around 20,000 tonnes and 43,000 tonnes for MX, the source added.

Yangzi also owns a selective TDP (STDP) facility with a nameplate capacity of 100,000 tonne/year of benzene and 100,000 tonne/year of MX at the same site but is has remained idle for a long time because of the poor economics in the past, he said.

Yangzi’s No 2 aromatics plant, which was started up in mid-July and has a nameplate capacity of 100,000 tonnes/year of benzene, 280,000 tonnes/year of toluene and 350,000 tonnes/year of MX, was running at 60% capacity currently, the source said.
