US Olin to permanently close part of Canada chlor alkali plantLONDON (ICIS)–INOVYN plans to consolidate chloromethane production at its Tavaux and Rosignano sites in France and Italy respectively and to close its facility at Runcorn in the UK from 1 March 2016 due to declining European demand, the company said on Tuesday.

“Our new operations strategy will ensure we are best positioned to focus on and meet the demand for chloromethanes in our core markets,” said CEO Chris Tane.

“It will also significantly improve our cost base and help underpin our sustainable, competitive position as a European chloromethanes producer,” he added.

Despite the planned closure of its Runcorn chloromethane unit, INOVYN said it will continue to offer the full range of methylene chloride grades, along with chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and perchloroethylene.

All chloromethane contracts will be covered, added a separate company spokesperson.

INOVYN said the closure of the chloromethanes asset at Runcorn will provide it with the opportunity to take advantage of increased availability of membrane chlorine capacity at the site, although further details on this were not immediately available.

The company said it does not expect there to be any compulsory redundancies in line with its existing Security of Employment and restructuring policies despite the planned Runcorn closure.

INOVYN’s nameplate capacities for chloromethanes are estimated to be around 100,000 tonnes/year at Runcorn, 70,000 tonnes/year at Tavaux and 30,000 tonnes/year at Rosignano, according to ICIS data.

The company declined to comment on capacity details for individual units in line with its policy.
