Jan US auto sales lag behind by 1.8% year on year

HOUSTON (ICIS)–US sales of new vehicles in January decreased by 1.8% when compared to January 2016, according to research firm AutoData on Wednesday.

Light trucks outperformed passenger cars in year-on-year gain with an 8.5% increase compared to a decrease of 12.2% for passenger cars.

The three major US automakers Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), General Motors (GM) and Ford all posted decreased sales.

FCA reported the largest drop of 11.2% for January with 152,218 total vehicles sold.

Despite reporting the highest January sales (195,817 vehicles) GM reported a 3.9% decrease overall, with a 21.4% decrease in cars sold.

Ford sales fell the least out of the three, with a 0.7% drop overall, though it increased truck sales by 6.1% in January 2017 compared to the same period in 2016.

Tesla had the highest sales percentage increase out of all the auto companies surveyed, with 4,000 electric vehicles sold in January 2017 compared to the 2,200 sold in January 2016, an increase of 81.8%.

The numbers followed the typical cycle, with January sales historically representing the lowest month in the year.
