US spot styrene falls on lower export demand

HOUSTON (ICIS)–US styrene spot prices were assessed sharply lower on Friday amid lower demand for US styrene exports and falling values for feedstock US benzene.

Styrene prices began the week slightly below last week’s range and steadily moved lower throughout the week. Market sources have attributed much of the downward movement for styrene prices to low demand for US exports to Asia, where styrene prices have been in decline and styrene inventories in China have been high.

Falling values for upstream US benzene spot prices also have put downward pressure on styrene values. Spot benzene prices this week are about 20% lower than their 2017 high point in early February.

US spot styrene was assessed on Friday at 61.25 cents/lb ($1,350/tonne).
