HOUSTON (ICIS)--Videolar-Innova, one of two major polystyrene producers in Brazil, is seeking to expand styrene monomer production in the Triunfo complex in Rio Grande do Sul state, a company source said on Tuesday.
The project will increase styrene capacity at the complex to 420,000 tonnes/year from 260,000 tonnes/year and is scheduled to become operational around April 2019.
In theory, for an increase of 180,000 tonnes/year of styrene, the company would need approximately 53,000 tonnes of ethylene and 142,000 tonnes of benzene.
This project would also expand capacity of expandable polystyrene (EPS), a segment of rapid growth globally.
Brazil’s PS markets have been plagued through the years by overcapacity of PS, which has precluded domestic price gains and forced increased exports.
The main PS producers in Brazil are Unigel and Videolar-Innova.
