Fire at ExxonMobil’s Rotterdam refinery now extinguished, impact not known

LONDON (ICIS)–ExxonMobil affiliate, Esso Nederland BV, experienced a fire in a powerformer unit at its Rotterdam refinery in the Netherlands, the company confirmed on Tuesday.

The fire occurred on Monday evening and has since been put out, according to the company’s official statement.

Products manufactured at the refinery include liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), petrol, naphtha, kerosene, diesel fuel, sulphur, petroleum cokes, and various other raw materials.

At present it is unclear which products have been affected and to what extent.

Local emergency services were onsite and the surrounding community was informed of the event.

According to the company’s website, the refinery hosts around 570 employees. There have been no reported injuries.

A flare currently remains visible in an attempt to safely reduce pressure in the powerformer unit.

Meanwhile, the company said it intends to investigate the cause of the fire and any subsequent damages.
