SINGAPORE (ICIS)–Chinese authorities have forbidden the transportation of dangerous chemicals in the northeastern port city of Tianjin during the 13th National Games to be held in September, the Ministry of Public Security said on Wednesday.

The ban will take place on 25 August to 10 September this year, the ministry’s Traffic Management Research Institute said in a statement.

Regional governments will also stop approving the passes needed to transport highly toxic chemicals to Tianjin as well as nearby routes, it said.

Gasoline and gasoil fundamentals in Tianjin are expected be adversely affected by the National Games, according to producers.

Tianjin-based gasoline and gasoil wholesalers will not be able to transport products from the nearby refineries in Shandong and Hebei due to the ban while demand will also be dampened as the movement of other vehicles within Tianjin will also be limited to certain timings, they said.

Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC and Shell Petrochemicals as well as several other firms have already applied to the relevant authorities for a special pass to transport their gasoline and gasoil products at night, according to industry sources.

This will also help reduce the impact on petrol stations in Tianjin and the movement of city dwellers during the National Games, they said.
