HOUSTON (ICIS)–PTT Global Chemical America (PTTGCA) and Daelim Industrial were approved for a $30m economic-development grant for a proposed petrochemical project the two may develop in the US state of Ohio, the companies said on Monday.

The grant from JobsOhio will allow the two to do site preparation work as they continue to work towards a final investment decision (FID), said Dan Williamson, a spokesman representing the project. The two have no timetable for making an FID.

The site preparation work should begin later this month, JobsOhio said.

If the PTTGCA and Daelim pursue the project, it would be built in Belmont county, and it will include a 1.5m tonne/year ethane cracker. It would also have 1.6m tonne/year of downstream capacity, including high density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low density PE (LLDPE) and metallocene linear low density PE (mLLDPE).

Bechtel has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the project.

If built, the project would receive ethane from the shale-gas reserves in the Marcellus and Utica in the northeastern US.

It would also join Shell’s petrochemical complex, which is being built in Monaca, Pennsylvania.
